In my mind the most important songwriter/lyricist/philosopher of the modern world is the great Tom Waits. His previous efforts where nothing short of musical revelations, with blending styles from 1930's jazz to southern blues to modern rock he has away of taking music cross genres and putting forth a work that bows to no conformity. Mr. Waits newest album is no different. The opening track is a New Orleans style Jazz number that sets the pace for a record that is all killer, no filler. As far as lyrical content, there is a reason the man has been referred to as the Charles Bukowski of music, their is a poetic flow to his word that take the gritty of common life and make them soft and beautiful.
