Does Natural Food Mean It's Organic?

My family and I have recently started a change in our eating habits. Besides cutting down on sweets we have been purchasing organic groceries. We never looked into the "organic lifestyle" until a friend of ours introduced us to it last year after she had developed breast cancer. It is appalling to find out all the pesticides and growth hormones that are applied or injected into the foods we eat which are can be contributing factors to many cancer. Organic foods use natural fertilizers, such a manure or compost to feed soil and plants. Organic meats also provide a leaner, healthier and fresher taste for the body. Organic meats are results from animals that are fed with a healthy diet as opposed corn feed cows with hormone injections. Eating organic will help provide a healthier lifestyle! However there are two downfalls, they take longer to produce and they are more pricier than conventional groceries. Remember, even though a product claims that it is all Natural, or Hormone-Free, it does not mean that it is UNLESS it has a USDA seal!

My Inner Geek Is Stoked: Free- Standford University Classes

I did not believe it at first. Good News! It is for real. I just signed up for two free classes at Standford University. I will not get actual college credit but will receive a certificate of completion. I think it is awesome Standford went from offering 3 free classes to 14 come 2012. Besides it being refreshing that there are educators who enjoy what they do so much they are willing to do it for free I will get to explore interests I have for free as try to narrow down the path I take. I will be participating in:

Black Friday

The day after Thanksgiving is called Black Friday. It's a day full of savings on presents that people like to give loved ones for Christmas. People take this time of year very seriously. Even though there are great deals, I think there are more fights than anything. I heard on the news that some lady took pepper spray and was spraying people to get to a certain item that she wanted. I think this is a little ridiculous and is out of control. I think that people should be a little more considerate of others when they are shopping and not fight over something that they have thousands of in stock.

Another day

November 22nd, 2011 passed without a hitch the other day, but I gave a moment of my day to reflect on an event that happened 48 years prior. The event of the John F. Kennedy assassination. Around this time of the year I often find myself asking what would this country be like if he were to have lived out his days as president normally. Would he have finished his term? Would he have run for another and win? Wondering if the course of history would have lead to his brother Bobby eventually reaching the high title of president as well. It is morbid to dwell on the fact that you can't change what had happened that fateful day. Much like all things that come to pass you cannot change, but scenerios are often played in this brain of mine whether or not it would be a better place this United States of America. I feel that the US has lost its beacon of opportunity, life, and happiness in recent years. 9/11 had more of a significant impact, maybe that might have not come to pass had the Kennedy's ruled the roost. LBJ wouldn't have had his say, a generation may not have been lost in Vietnam, and Watergate may have never fully been played out. It's unfortunate the way America's family the Kennedys had so much bad luck, and truley promising talents that never fully blossomed. I salute JFK, you don't wish an event such as this every occurs, but it possible at any point in time.

Thanksgiving

This past Thursday was Thanksgiving as everyone knows. My family has a really different tradition for Thanksgiving. We used to have a big traditional dinner with my entire family including extended aunts, uncles, and cousins. We dressed up and looked fancy, but when my grandmother died we switched it up. Now my Aunt Lisa does a small dinner with just 10 of us. We have pajama Thanksgiving. We all wear our pajamas and just eat and watch a Christmas movie. Its really fun for me because it makes me miss my grandmother but it also makes me realize how close my family is and that is what I'm truly thankful for.

A Sad Day For the Hulkster

I have been a wrestling fan for almost my whole life, and it's something that I will always enjoy. Without a doubt, one of my favorite wrestlers of all time is Hulk Hogan. Everything that he has done in the ring has been nothing short of entertaining and I have owned several of his DVD collections and t-shirts. Also, my friends and I saw his last WWE match, which is something that I will remember. I often debate with my friends on whether or not he is the greatest wrestler who ever lived.

However, this is not about his in ring work and illustrious wrestling career, but more about his personal life. I wish I could say that it was as positive as his wrestling career, but that couldn't be farther from the truth. Recently on November 23, the divorce details with his wife Linda have gone public. Linda had received several of his possessions, like expensive an Cadillac, a Corvette, a Rolls-Royce, and a Mercedez Benz. Along with taking these cars, the former Mrs. Hulk Hogan had also received close to 45 million dollars from her ex-husband! What was Hulk left with, a mere 3 million but he doesn't have to pay an alimony. He is also still making money based on appearances he makes in TNA Wrestling, the number 2 promotion to WWE.

What does this say about Hulk? Well, it's just another blemish on his legacy. Is anyone going to remember all his classic promos and matches from the 80's and 90's? No, I feel like everyone will only remember his broken marriage and the drama that had came from it. It's upsetting to see this, and it's even more upsetting to see this woman take everything away from him as well. Granted, I don't condone what Hogan had done (he allegedly cheated on her with a 19 year old!) but was all of this really necessary?

American Hikers in Iran

I'd like to touch on the story about the American hikers who were recently returned to the United States after being held in an Iranian prison for two years. For those who are unfamiliar with the story, in 2009, three graduate students decided that it would be a good idea to go hiking along the Iraq/Iran border. It should not come as a surprise to anybody that the two students were arrested by Iranian police and accused of espionage and held as hostages for two years. During this time, the hikers maintained their innocence and had limited contact with their families. They were recently released for a one million-dollar ransom and sent home.
Now, am I the only person who has a problem with this story? Doesn't it seem odd that three graduate students lacked the commom sense to think that it would be dangerous for three white Americans to literally walk the border of two war-torn countries? and furthermore, doesn't it seem a little obsurd that over a million dollars has to be spent for their little adventure and now we have to see these two on every talk show being regarded as heros? Don't get me wrong. I am like the hikers in the way that I also believe that people should be able to go where they please without having to be in fear of violence. That should be a basic human right. However, I differ from these "scholars" in the way that I understand that there is a difference between the way that the world should be and the way that the world is. American values are not universal and there are places that are not safe for Americans to be wandering around. I don't know if these individuals are danger enthusiasts or they just lack the common sense to recognize danger, but I am not looking forward to the media coverage that us going to follow this incident. I believe that the only reason that these two are alive is because they are Americans. Since Americans are known for having money, the captors figured that a ransom would bring a big pay day, which it did. Now, I would never wish death on anybody and I am glad that the hikers are safe. I just hope that the media will be very careful of how the hikers are portrayed in the media. When I look at the hikers, I do not see heros. I see three young people who made an ignorant lapse in judgment and who are very lucky to be alive.

Red Sox manager search narrowed down to two?

After much interviewing and perseverance, the hunt for the next Red Sox manager may soon be over. The two front-runners for the position are Bobby Valentine and Gene Lamont. Bobby Valentine is 61 years old and has not managed in the majors since 2002, while Gene Lamont is 65 years old and is currently the Detroit Tiger's third-base coach. It is apparent that the Red Sox are now aiming towards a veteran manager, one who will not need much time to get the hang of things in Boston. Although Red Sox GM Ben Cherington said previously that he would like to have a new manager in place by Thanksgiving, it is now likely that an announcement will not be made until sometime early next month.

Protect Yourself Online, the Internet is Dangerous.

This blog entry really hits home to me as it is not the first time something like this has happened and I also feel like the Internet is a stomping ground for criminal activity. Let’s start with last Sunday. I noticed my bank account was losing money and it was from transactions I never made. I had to call my bank, cancel my credit /bank cheque card, order new cards, dispute the transactions, and late fees. I now have to wait until the Bank investigates the incident and luckily my credit union put the money back in my account. This however, is not the first time I have experienced problems using the internet.
In 2007, I had a PayPal account. I never saved my information online. However, a person did get my banking info and ordered a computer over $500.00 I noticed the charge, called my credit union, and they refunded my money and cancelled the transaction right away. All I knew of the incident from this point was that the authorities got involved and they were looking into the claim. I am reserved about using online methods to pay my bills now and will warn any person to be careful when they make payments online using a credit card or with their banking information.
But I got off easy! Imagine all the other things that happen on craigslist. I know of at least one murder, multiple scams and issues with privacy, amongst a slew of other issues. I read this article regarding a man looking for employment and that he was found murdered in Ohio. This involved a man from FL (murdered) and a man from South Carolina (shot but survived). Read here for more information:

My point is there are so many things that could happen to you on the internet that you might not have considered. Or you might think, this would never happen to me. I can assure you, at some point you will experience at least a mild issue of fraud or a person who has tried to obtain your personal information. I sure hope nothing as bad as what happened on Craigslist will happen but it seems to be a trend.
The question is How Do I protect myself? Well, do not store your personal or banking information online or on your computer. Do not engage in activities online that involve meeting strangers or cash transactions. Do not read emails or download links from people or sources you do not know. This might sound like the basics, but I just feel like these types of occurrences keep happening and the stories just keep getting worse.
Please protect yourself when online. On a happy note, have a safe, happy Thanksgiving holiday and enjoy it with your family and friends.

The NFL

The New England Patriots had a dominant performance last night on Monday Night Football. The played the Kansas City Chiefs, who are without their starting quarter back, running back, and both safeties due to injuries. The Patriots started slow and looked like they were going to have trouble against the sliding Chiefs, who have lost three staright games now. The score at halftime was 10-3 Patriots as Palko (the Chiefs backup qb) seemed to be doing pretty well in his first NFL start. However after half time the Patriots took over and scored 17 unanswered points in the 3rd quarter and then one more touchdown in the 4th quarter to win by a score of 34-3. One other notable happening this week was Tim Tebow's 3rd staright win. No one expected him to be able to win in the NFL, especially when you look at his stats.

Thanksgiving

The first definition of thanksgiving in Webster's dictionary is: a giving of thanks.  How clear and simple can you get?  And yet, how deep and profound.  As we look forward to stuffing ourselves with turkey and pie, we need to take a second to look at the "true meaning" of this wonderful holiday, and expand our appreciation of its blessing.  The verb "to give", also according to Webster, is to hand or pass over something as a gift; while "thanks", is the grateful acknowledgment of something received by or done for one.  And so we see in the very definition of the word, Thanksgiving, a two-way flow is expressed--you would only say "thank you" to someone if they have given something to you, or done something to bless you.
This wonderful nation of ours, and all of its citizens, have much to be thankful for.  No matter the economy, the employment statistics, snow storms, tornados, drought and floods, we enjoy a standard of living and a sense of security and freedom that no people in history have ever known.  I propose that the same covenant God, whom our Pilgrim Fathers thanked at the first Thanksgiving, is deserving of our recognition and thanks today.  George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, F D Roosevelt proclaimed special feast days of thanksgiving for one purpose: to remind the people HOW MUCH He has handed over or passed to us as a gift, and how fitting it is for us to gratefully acknowledge His kindness.  Let's not have this Thanksgiving day pass without giving Him thanks.

Disappointed with retailers and their Black Friday antics

I have been a fan of shopping on Black Friday for many years now. I started going out in the early morning hours and standing in long lines when my kids were very young. I found it was the only way I could get them those hot toys that were hard to find yet they desperately wanted. I think my first time doing it was the year that Tickle Me Elmo was impossible to find. I have been going out every year since then and as they have grown the items have changed from toys to electronics and other things. Last year I brought my teenage daughter with me for the first time.  We were in line at Best Buy long before the 5:00 AM opening hoping to snag all the items on our wish list at a bargain price.
Over the past few years I have noticed a trend with the stores opening earlier and earlier. In the past two years some stores have gone from opening at 5:00 AM, to 4:00 AM and then to 3:00 AM. However, this year really takes the cake with almost all the major stores opening at midnight or even earlier.
I must say I was so disgusted with this new start time that for the first time in well over a decade I opted not to head out when the stores opened on Black Friday. My daughter and I did go shopping on Black Friday but not at midnight; instead we went earlier in the morning when we would have normally headed out. Luckily, this year we were not looking for any of the hot deals being offered when the doors opened, so we were not disappointed.
I am not in favor of this trend towards opening earlier and earlier. I think what the retailers are doing is wrong because they are forcing employees and customers to cut short their Thanksgiving celebrations and that is just not right.  I have included a link to an article about Target employees who had sent a petition to the company protesting the requirement that they have to begin working on Thanksgiving night. When I was out shopping I felt bad for many of the store employees I came in contact with because they had been working since 11:00 PM on Thanksgiving night and it was now Friday morning. These people are not accustomed to working a night shift and I think it was unfair of their employers to force them into this situation.
I hope that by the time the weekend comes to a close that the sales numbers do not support the early openings.  Otherwise, if the retailers believe they had successful shopping weekend we may pay the price next year with store openings beginning early on Thanksgiving Day instead of Friday. Who knows are far they will go next time.

Fed up with the power company’s response or lack of…..

I am still trying to come to grips with last week’s extended power failure and the long days that my family and I spent freezing while sitting in the dark. I am trying not to blame the power company but I am having a difficult time letting them off the hook.
It was 2 ½ days before we even saw any crews working in the town. I understand that this was an extreme weather event that caused so much damage the power companies were crippled in their ability to respond but they really need to stop playing that card and move on.
The other day National Grid was at a town meeting in Foxboro to listen to the complaints of residents who have suffered through two major power outages within just a few months of each other. Of course, the reps. from National Grid blamed these unusual and extreme weather events on Mother Nature and they really had nothing else to say. Instead, they just stood there while they were repeatedly berated by outraged customers.
I really feel as though all the power companies are clueless! It does not take a genius to realize that global warming and extreme weather phenomenon are here to stay. We only need to look back over the past six month here in New England where we have had tornados, an earthquake, a hurricane and a Nor’easter. Let’s not even get into the global events over the past year! With that said the power companies need to be looking forward and coming up with a strategic plan to deal with these extreme events. I don’t believe the power companies are doing enough to plan for these situations. I have yet to see them issue any type of statement that they are investigating preventive alternatives or ways they can quicken the response time when reacting to a disaster situation.
I personally think that each town and city should pursue establishing their own utility services. I know that currently only a few communities have the capability but I saw on the news that the state is considering changing the laws to allow this possibility.

Daylight Savings Time, Thank you for this hour!

I recently read an article by Laura Schocker; “Daylight Saving 2011: How Time Change Affects our Health”.
As an early riser, (5am every day, even weekends) the extra hour of sleep meant that when I woke up, the sun was there to greet me with warmth.  I agree that this is a good news story, most people do welcome the extra hour in winter opposed to the hour we lose each Spring.
What is your opinion?
An interesting fact is that some studies have found a link between the spring-forward clock change and an increase in accidents and heart attacks.
Falling back does come with some troubles. Winter, oh winter, you make me cringe.  The real story is that we go into winter after getting back one little precious hour.
According to Dr. Rosenberg, “Getting bright light in the morning is absolutely key to health and performance and everything that goes with it.” This statement rings true with me. When it was dark on my drive to work, the moment of joy was when the sunrise popped in view over the horizon. A sigh and smile came with the change of day.
Daylight savings time is important to getting refreshed and revitalized. Sleep deprivation can cause serious health issues, so try to keep a steady schedule which might include a quick powernap or two. Here is to good sleep, regular hours, and final wish for joy to all during this holiday season.

Mixed Martial Arts: Not Just For Adults

About a month ago, I first heard of a new sports phenomenon that has caused controversy among many parents. Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a form of organized combat that has gained much popularity in recent years. It is a full-contact sport that allows striking and grappling techniques such as boxing, American wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai and many others. MMA has gained popularity through Pay Per View match specials and reality training shows. The interest in this new sport has also caused many Americas to participate in the sport on both recreational and professional levels. The main issue that many people have asked is how young is too young to participate in this sport. Although many states have youth MMA training centers, there are many states that have banned the sport on grounds that children aren’t yet physically developed to participate in full contact sports. MMA specialists have argued against these claims stating that youth MMA has undergone modifications in their rules and their equipment regulations to make the sport safe for children. I've seen this issue pop up on many sports blogs as well as many news articles. Before I give my opinion on this issue, I want to make it clear that I am in no way, shape or form an expert on mixed martial arts. Although I have never participated in an MMA match, I have had experience playing football, rugby, wrestling and boxing over a 13 year period. I am giving my opinion on youth participation in contact sports in general. I believe that children should be allowed to participate in organized MMA if they choose to do so. If proper precautions such as adequate equipment and supervision are taken, there is no reason why MMA should be treated differently than any other sport. Youth contact sports are the same in the way that they call can result in injury if they aren’t being played properly. Saying that only one sport should be banned is hypocritical. In my experience, I sustained the worst of my injuries in football, a sport that I played on the youth level. I believe that youth contact sports such as football and hockey are dangerous because they encourage violence without the discipline and respect that is taught in combat sports such as MMA and martial arts. I also disagree with people who claim that children who participate in MMA are more violent by nature. I find these to be ignorant claims made by people who are uneducated on the subject. My opinion is not meant to promote the idea that contact sports are not dangerous. Injuries are possible in literally all sports. I am merely asking that people do not discriminate against a sport because it is new. Many sports that we have grown up with would be considered barbaric to others. This topic is an interest of mine and I hope to discuss it further with anyone who wishes to do so.

Children Leap to Learning

The makers of leapfrog have made many popular and successful interactive gaming toys for children of all ages. Their new product the leappad is a tablet created just for children. With children in our society today already tech savvy, the leappad would be the perfect gift for any child. It also gives us parents a sigh of relief now that our children will no longer hog our tablets. The leappad is studier than the regular tablets or ipads serving to their primary owners, the children. The leappad comes in two color variations, white and green or white and pink. Children are able to download apps to their tablets and play interactive learning games to enhance their knowledge. The leappad has received great reviews so far from parents! I actually was planning on buying the leappad for my soon to be three year old son but weened away from it because I think he is still a little bit too young. However, I do love leapfrog's products and got the leapster 2 for my son instead because it was targeted more toward his age group.

Tommy Terrific Arrive Late for Game

Well it was a tale of two halves for Patriots all-world quarterback Tom Brady on Sunday Night Football.  Brady, and his Patriots looked sluggish early on but still went into the locker-room at halftime with a 13-9 lead.  Brady, who after connecting with long pass to Chad Ochocinco early in the game seemed to go into a funk. Frequently throwing balls wide and behind his receivers. However, something clicked in the second half and Brady lead his team down the field,  completing pass after pass on one of the best defensive backfields in the league. Brady finished the night 26/39 329yds with 3 Td's and zero int's.  Tight end Rob Gronkowski led the Patriots in receiving with 8 rec for 113yrds and 2 Td's. This was a statement game for the Pat's who have struggled mightily on the defensive side of the ball.  Rob Ninkovich and Andre Carter stepped up with huge games.  Ninkovich, who intercepted two passes, the second brought back for a touchdown looked good and Carter finally gave the Pats a much needed pass rush, finishing with 4 sacks.  Good overall performance by the Patriots on the road, who with the win move back into first place alone in the East.

I Have The Obvious Answer

The article Medical Schools Neglect Gay and Gender Issues  really just made me wonky. Perhaps it is because I am in the midst of losing my job in a medical office after a long horrific investigation of discrimination between my coworker and the medical director. Watching doctors pull colleagues personal lives and undisclosed gender identities out of the blue to use for their benefit. Seeing a group of doctors not think about the patients most importantly, but really not anyone but themselves. My foster kid, who is now a young adult, is  a trans man and I from a distance support him while he struggles to find providers to prescribe the testosterone he needs for his medical condition per the American Medical Association. The time I spend helping people fight their health insurance companies to cover transition related costs.
In the article it states, ""it’s difficult for medical schools to find experts qualified to teach." Well who better then the people who know best. The ones receiving the poor treatment from their providers. The ones who lack the fancy educations and good jobs due to being so marginalized and lack of legal protections. That is the answer. I am not sure why such educated people cant think about the simple and obvious answers.

Questions

Hi Everyone!  Since there have been some eligibility and exclusion questions I wanted to share with you all the questions and answers.

Is a subject with enterococcus eligible?
As per Protocol version 2.1, Section 8.5.3.1.1, these subjects are eligible as long as they have not been previously treated with Levofloxacin. Only coagulase-negative Staphylococcus and non-Group D Streptococci are considered non - pathogenic for cUTI in this study. Further, subjects with only Staphylococcus aureus isolated from the baseline urine culture, must be discontinued from study drug.

What happens to a subject that is found to have a bacterial organizm that is resistant to Levo or CXA201 (confirmed at baseline culture report)?
As per Protocol version 2.1, Section 8.5.6.1, if an organism found to be resistant to 1 or both study drugs is isolated from the urine, the Investigator should use their clinical judgement (primarily based on the individual subject's response to therapy) to determine whether the subject should remain on study drug therapy. See Section 8.5.6.1 for more details

The protocol has been broken out by section for your convience and easy access.  You can find it the Study Library.
I am so excited to be receiving these questions and encourage them. Do not hesitate to reach out to us for any reason at all~  I look forward to hearing from you!

The Blu-Ray: Where it Stands Now

Yesterday, it was five years ago the Sony PlayStation 3 debuted along with Sony's new format for DVDs. While it had a harsh start at the beginning, the PlayStation 3 now has some of the best video games out on the market. With the new DVD format, it was called Blu-Ray. It received criticism because it was the same thing as an HD DVD format that had just came out. Was Blu-Ray destined to fail?
It was, since HD DVD was poised to be the next big format. However, the critics were all wrong. HD DVDs have now become obsolete and Blu-Ray has become the lead high definition format for home movies.
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/cLhGocXP-Is" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
The praise for it is well deserved as I have seen several movies, like The Dark Knight, Die Hard, and more recently Star Wars Episodes IV, V, and VI. The picture quality is the best I have ever seen, and the special effects look even better. If anyone has an HD television set, this just adds to the whole experience. With live action movies, it's great and I've heard with animated movies like Toy Story or any of the other Pixar films it looks even better. However, if there is one complaint that I could have with Blu-Ray's picture quality, it's with older black and white movies. It's A Wonderful Life is one of my favorite movies of all time, but put in high definition it looks...not the best. Young Frankenstien also looks pretty bad as well. Maybe it was because the format of the cameras are different, or maybe HD was made for color as opposed to black and white?
Another criticism that I have for it, is if you don't own a PlayStation 3 than you might have to go out and buy a Blu-Ray player and those are rather expensive. However, despite these minor criticisms, the Blu-Ray movies still can stand on their own and the amount of content that they contain can keep a viewer busy for hours. Since I'm a pretty big wrestling fan, a lot of the recent WWE collections on Blu-Ray have extra matches and content not seen on regular DVD sets. The Star Wars re-releases (I think they re-release those movies every few years now) have TONS of content as well like documentaries and such.
It had a rough start and a lot of criticism, but I think that the Blu-Ray format is here to stay and eventually, become the norm for most people's formats for movies. It's interesting to see that this new format that was almost destined to fail, ended up succeeding. The PlayStation 3's status, well that's another blog for another day.

Red Sox to have second interview with Sveum

The Red Sox have had interviews with several potential replacements for their manager position, but it appears that Dale Sveum will be the first to have a second interview. The Red Sox will reportedly be meeting with Sveum again sometime this week for their next meeting. It is unknown if this means that Sveum is the frontrunner in the Red Sox manager race, or if interviews with others are to follow. If Sveum does manage the Red Sox, it is expected that his style of managing would be quite different than former manager Terry Francona’s, with perhaps stricter rules for the teams controversial club house behavior. Even if Sveum does not become the new manager for the Red Sox, GM Ben Cherington has said that they are aiming to have somebody in place by Thanksgiving.

Sex: Before or After Marriage

Stephanie Meyers Twilight Series, has what seems to be an impact on younger people. I was looking online and saw a poll of 1500 young Americans some have said that after reading the books they want to remain virgins until they get married. Now how can a book series have a larger effect on whether or not people have sex before marriage over the church? In my opinion the books seem to portray the idea much better than saying you're sinning. The books actually show how special it can be to wait and share that special time when you get married. Also, it shows kids that you don’t need to just sleep around because that’s what everyone else is doing. I believe that the books show everyone that you should wait until you find the one person that you can spend the rest of your life with before you make the jump into a bed.

The NFL

This week the Patriots came back form their bye week and dominated the Jets. This was a very important game for both teams. The Patriots are now in first place, basically with a two game lead on the Jets, because they have a better record by one game and they have beaten them in both meetings this season. The Patriots also released defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth this week and he was immediately picked up by Tampa Bay.Haynesworth had only two tackles all season for the patriots, but in his first game with Tampa Bay he posted five tackles. He said in an interview that he was very happy to be in Tampa, and that "good things come to those who wait".

Websites Im Obsessed With

I have found a new website that I am slowly becoming obsessed with. Its called Tumblr its a place to post pictures, quotes, videos, and blog. Its really fun since Im really into photography and graphics. I started my own blog there which is mostly quotes and graphics. Its really fun because you can follow other people and see their new pictures in what they call a "dashboard." It kind of reminds me of a news feed on Facebook. Another website I'm always going to lately is Gilt.com. Its a website where you can go to and get all designer clothing, accessories, and home good for half the price. It even has a "city" section where you can click on Boston and get discounts on restaurants, classes, and events. Its really cool, especially when Im getting awesome deals on things I usefully couldn't pay for. Another thing I really like about both sites is that they have apps for my blackberry so I can always be connected. Check them out!

Gwar Guitarist Cory Smoot AKA Flattus Maximus found dead on tour bus (11/4/201111)

Gwar guitarist Cory Smoot aka “Flattus Maximus” was found dead on their tour bus yesterday.

Having just finished a show in Minneapolis, it is determined Smoot died sometime during the night or in the morning. Gwar is well known for elaborate sci-fi meets horror costumes, and their politically charged themes.

The band was touring for their most recent album, Bloody Pit of Horror. When the band arrived at the US / Canadian border; band mates tried to wake up Cory and found he had passed away, the cause of death is unknown.

Gwar is a satirical / theatrical band, who dresses up as Monsters. They are known to satire the human race as scum or dogs. Their music is moral and political in nature.

David Brockie, the frontman of Gwar founded the band in 1984. In a statement he said; “It is with a sense of profound loss & tragedy that the members of Gwar must announce the passing of their longtime guitarist and beloved friend Cory Smoot.”

Gwar is famous for killing political figures and musicians in their live acts. They have killed Obama, Hillary Clinton, George Bush, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, and many others on stage and a big part of their act is when they decapitate the person fake blood is sprayed on the crowd.

I am including a few videos in honor of Flattus. RIP, Cory Smoot.

Redbox Increases Rates

Redbox has increased their rental charge for movies from $1 a day to $1.20 per day. The additional $0.20 charge came about in result of operational cost such as debit card fees. However, the increased of rental charge does not apply towards renting Blu-ray dvds or games. Blu-ray dvds will stay at the rate of $1.50 and games will also stay at the rate of $2.00 per day. For a limited time from October 31st to November 30th, Redbox is offering renters the special rental rate of $1 for the first rental day if renters reserve their selected movie[s] choice online at Redbox.com but, will be charged the $1.20 for additional rentals days. Personally, I don't see what the big deal is... the increased price still beats Netflix!

Some Questions

Below are a couple of questions that had been handed in that I wanted to share with you all. We are interested to hear your questions on the impact this trial may have for care and future research.

Why CXA-201?
CXA-201 has a broad spectrum of activity against gram-negative organisms, including and covering many Enterobacteriaceae including ESBLs, the extended-spectrum beta-lactamases. However, it's most exciting feature is that it is the most potent beta-lactam active against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, including strains resistant to other therapies. We envisage that CXA-201 will be a very useful addition to the antibiotic agents available to treat serious bacterial infections.
CXA-201's mechanism of action.

CXA-201, like other beta-lactams, irreversibly inhibits bacterial cell wall replication. Bacterial cell walls are very important for their structural integrity and inhibiting this process leads to bacterial cell death.
Enzymes that break down beta-lactamases could render organisms expressing these enzymes resistant to CXA-201. To guard against this, CXA-101 is co-formulated with tazobactam, a potent suicide inhibitor of most beta-lactamases, thereby protecting CXA-201 from hydrolysis and preserving its activity in organisms expressing ESBLs.
I'm proud and excited to play my part in the CXA-201 trial and I hope you are, too. Many thanks for all of your hard work in this trial!

Work, Life, Balance and the Working Mother

By the time I’ve taken care of my son and of my husband and worked all day I have no energy or time left for myself.  There are so many responsibilities packed into one day for a working parent that you can sometimes find yourself feeling irritated, annoyed, and resentful.    Today many employers are becoming more mindful of the fact that working parents need a better work/life balance. Some companies provide flex schedules, in house massages, and convenience services such as dry cleaning.
Many companies allow their employees to work from home one or more days per week, which is an easy way for you to spend more time in the morning and afternoon with your children rather than in standstill traffic.
Below are a few tips I have seen on my company website pertaining specifically to work, life, balance:

1.       Use one calendar for all appointments. If you have a conference scheduled for Monday morning, you're not going to be late to work. Putting all of your appointments whether they involve the office or the family on one calendar makes it easier to avoid schedule conflicts and missing personal appointments. You'll also be able to notice if you're spending more time on work than on family with a quick glance at the calendar.

2.      Make your family a priority. Although your family is the most important thing in your life, you might forget to show it. Devote your weekends and any free weekday evenings to family activities. Even if you can't plan a mid-week activity, make a quick phone call to your children to see how their school day went.

3.       Take it easy. Work can become so hectic that you forget that you actually do like your job and the people around you. Leave some free time to relax and regroup between meetings so you don't stay in a constant state of stress. You'll be able to appreciate what you do and who you work with.
These are just a few tips that I saw and didn’t even know existed until I spoke with a friend in Human Resources.  Most companies also have an Employee Assistance Program where you can find many more helpful free tips to help keep you organized and as stress free as possible.

Red Sox manager options shrinking

As more and more time passes, it seems the Red Sox get further and further from landing a new manager. Mike Maddux, one who many thought was a frontrunner for Boston’s manager position, has decided he does not want to work in Boston. He states that his reason for removing himself from consideration as a Boston manager is that he would not be able to see his family enough. “The game of baseball has many sacrifices, but being apart from family is the toughest,” Says Maddux. “I feel there is too much distance between the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and Boston to see my family as much as I'd enjoy.”

With this loss of a potential manager, this leaves Boston with Sandy Alomar Jr., who the team will be interviewing Wednesday, and Pete Mackanin and Dale Sveum, who they interviewed last week. It seems that the team wants to get somebody who might be a little more aggressive and vocal than former manager Terry Francona, which certainly could have been what the team needed at the end of last season. Many believe that the players were simply too comfortable with Terry Francona, and as a result were not being pushed as much as they could have been. While the search for a manager has been slow, Red Sox GM Ben Cherington has said that he would like to have a new manager by Thanksgiving.

Google A Conspiracy Theory?!

I am obsessed with technology, understanding how it works, keeping up with it and trying to get ahead of it. I am also a bit of an ethics nut. Recently I have developed an interest in the law or should I say the lack there of in the world wide web. I feel myself quite drawn to it yet I hold my strong opinions on the freedoms and the lack there of in this virtual world. Am I in the middle of my own ethical dilemma?! Free music, instant connections, and more information then I will ever know what to do with. I love the challenge of creating my own remixes with free software. Am I contributing to potential illegal activity? Is my largest obsession, Google, contributing to unethical business practices that are leading to the decline of a business culture by supporting a free and creative culture? Or is it the other way around?

Is It Going to Be Any Different At Any Other Part of The Day?

One of the most anticipated video games this year is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Not being a real fan of the series, it's one of the titles that I could personally care less about, as there are other great games that I am looking forward to, like Uncharted 3. However, the two games have something in common; both had midnight releases.
And I ask; what is the point? Is the game really going to be different at midnight? Will something new and exciting happen? Will all of your answers be answered? Will you be disappointed with Modern Warfare 3 like how I was with the last three games in the series? Ok, maybe not with the last question, but in all seriousness, are midnight releases necessary for video games? Or anything for that matter?
With movies, I can kind of understand. Critics need to see them in order to actually do their job, and sometimes studios rely on this for hardcore fans of a film series (like Star Wars or Harry Potter) to spend the money so the film can be profitable. Maybe I can see that reason with games, but all it does is make a person wait in line for several hours with people whom they have no desire to see. Not to mention, you're tired and everyone else is as well. However, here's the thing. The game/movie/CD/whatever is the same thing at any other time of day than it is at midnight. Nothing really special happens, it's just mostly bragging rights to see "who got to see it/buy it first" I guess. To me, that's just stupid.

My Fantasy

So I am a big Hockey guy. For the past couple of years I took a hiatus from playing any Fantasy Sports. I dabbled previously in Football, Baseball and Hockey. Hockey was my favorite of the three and I knew how to battle week in and week out for points to win the specific league. In hockey I know the players inside and out, and their tendincies. Early in September I was asked to join a league that consisted of some of my close friends. I said to myself sure why not. Now that I am back to Fantasy Hockey which adds to the attention for standings and statistics  throughout the year, I hope to take a nice prize home at the end of the season. As of now I am # 1 in my league with solid players, but struggling in the goaltending department. I just hope the ship rights itself, considering my struggles I am still heading towards victory even so early into the 2011-2012 NHL season. Typing this now, I probably will just jinx myself if I update towards the end of season.

Wait....Where's My Thanksgiving?

It was only a few short weeks ago that all of the pharmacies, grocery stores and shopping malls were overrun with Halloween festivities.  One couldn't go far without seeing black and orange decorations, masks, costumes and piles upon piles of candy. Being the Halloween enthusiast that I am, I never complain during this time of the year. Now that I'm too old to go trick-or-treating without having the police called on me, I've focused my Halloween celebrations on the week after Halloween when all of the candy is discounted and I can pig out to my satisfaction.
This year's candy venture however, was not a happy one for me. I had noticed something in the grocery stores that was not only odd, but downright disturbing. With Halloween barely a week behind us, I was shocked to see that the entire store was fully converted into a Christmas wonderland! What was originally a place to find ghosts and goblins was now filled with stockings, Santa hats and tinsel! The reason why I was so upset about this sight was the complete lack of acknowledgment of Thanksgiving! It's almost like the country went from Halloween right to Christmas and passed over Thanksgiving completely.
I have always been a huge fan of Thanksgiving. I would the first to say that I prefer Thanksgiving over Christmas because it's a holiday that hasn't been beaten to death my commercialism. Furthermore, the stress that surrounds many Christmas shoppers makes December 25th a shopping deadline rather than a time to be with loved ones. You don't get that stress with Thanksgiving. Living out in LA this semester, Ive already lost most of my fall experience this year. Let this be a warning to all places of business. BACK OFF. This is our time to be with our families, watch football/parades, feast and reflect on the blessings for which we are thankful. I will eventually be ready for stockings and mistletoe, but that won't be until November 25th at the earliest.
Am I the only person who has noticed this injustice on my beloved turkey day?

Outraged by the unethical behavior of the Framingham building commissioner

Earlier this week I was watching WBZ news and I saw an undercover report from the I-Team. The I-Team did an undercover investigation on the Framingham building commissioner Michael Foley and what they uncovered is shocking. The thought of a public official abusing their position and stealing our hard earned taxpayer dollars, especially, during such difficult economic times. It just makes my blood boil!
Michael Foley the Framingham building commissioner earns over $90K per year and an investigation by WBZ found that he repeated lied on his expense reports, charged inconsistent permit fees and golfed every week during working hours. Mr. Foley would charge different permit fees for identical projects. He charged Whole Foods $5,000 for permits but the gym that he attends got a much reduced rate when they had a project. He repeatedly waived or lowered permit fees for friends. Plus his expense reports were padded so he was getting hundreds of additional dollars every month. He would lie and put down mileage on days he was not even working. On the days he did work he put in for mileage way above what he actually traveled.
I cannot even imagine why someone would think this abuse of our tax money is acceptable. This guy must have some ego to think that he could continue to abuse the system and not get caught. Anyone with half a brain would have thought twice about continuing these activities after the similar incident with Sheriff DiPaola but not this guy.
I think this type of behavior happens a lot more often that we know and maybe it is time we all start watching our own local public officials and asking more questions when things don’t seem to add up. We certainly have a right to ask the questions and we can always forward our findings and concerns to our local new stations to investigate. I think it is high time we end this kind of abuse.

The NFL

This week The New England Patriots lost miserably to the Pittsburg Steelers. It was tough to watch. The offense, which has consistently been the bright spot on the team, struggled as well as the defense. The secondary couldn't do anything to stop the Steelers offense and they passed with ease all over the defense. The defensive line got very little pressure and the whole defense looked terrible. The Offense couldn't run or pass effectively and only had a few good plays. The Saints also had a surprising loss after dominating the Colts last week 62-7. This week they lost to the Rams who were winless before the game.

Tiger Down Under

Tiger Woods returns to competitive golf this week in the Australian Open, which will stand as a tune-up for the President's Cup later in the month.  Woods, who claims is finally fully healed from knee surgery, looks to return to playing the type of golf that made him the face of the game over the last decade plus.
It seems that Tiger has done a good job keeping himself out of the spot light, has tried his best to put his past behind him and really work on his game, and himself as a person.  Love him or hate him, you can't deny his talent. The PGA needs Woods as much as Tiger needs them.
There are plenty of really good young players like Rickie Fowler, Dustin Johnson, and Rory McElroy who will still be playing after Woods retires.  But Tiger is Tiger.  When he plays in a golf tournament people watch.  Ratings show that when Tiger Woods is playing golf on Sunday a lot more people tune in.
That's just the way it is.  Hopefully, Tiger can put his game back together and return to his dominating ways.  Golf is just more fun to watch when he is around.

Why Casinos in Massachusetts Are Not Actually a Bad Idea

I moved to Massachusetts from Florida this summer.  I am not really a gambler, but I am used to having casinos around and know how much people love them, and realized that many people in Massachusetts love going to gamble as well.  Except what I found to be strange is that they travel to other states (I know two big ones are over the border in Connecticut) and give this huge revenue to them.  It boggles my mind with something as commonly loved as gambling would be scoffed in this state, as it's many financial advantages could certainly help us in these dire economical times.  And it's not like online gambling is illegal in this state.  My cousin blows so much money on an online poker site it amazes me, when he could be spending his money on a stimulating economic boost, as casinos help the growth of entire communites.  They generate a huge amount of jobs, including casino employees, labor jobs, restaurants, hotels, just to mention a few of the most obvious. I don't see why so many people are against welcoming casinos to this state; I just don't think they know what they're missing out on.

Halloween

Years ago, halloween was reffered to as All Hallows Eve. It was mostly for Wiccans. It was their day to celebrate. Now everyone uses this as a holiday to dress up and go out to stranger's or friend's houses for candy. It used to be safe to go around and knock on people's doors, but now you have watch out for crazy people taking children, checking candy to make sure there is nothing wrong with it, etc. This used to be a day for fun and excitement. People can dress up, carve pumpkins and eat your weight in candy. The costumes used to be presentable, now they are all about showing off skin. It should go back to the way it was, but its not going to happen until people learn better.

Our American Fabius

Two-hundred-and-thirty-five years ago this week, October 31 through November 5, 1776, our American Fabius was executing his military plans with the same tatics as his Roman nickname-namesake.  Who was the Roman Fabius? and what was our American Fabius doing to earn his moniker?
Around 141BC Hannibal and his Carthiginian armies (including multiple elephants) passed through the Alps into northern Italy, conquering all the Latin territories, and even capturing and occupying Rome itself.  The Roman Senate authorized the General Maximus Fabius to lead the legions of Rome to fight the invaders.  Completely overwhelmed by the Carthaginian fire-power of men, arms, and elephants, Fabius fought the invaders through tactics of evasion, attack and withdraw, and what we know today as guerilla warfare.  It was a long war of attrition, but after four years Fabius drove the Carthaginians out of Italy.
Our American Fabius, George Washington, faced the same overwhelming odds in the fall of 1776.  That June, the British navy, with an armada of 45 ships, had deposited 30,000 red coats, and 17,000 Hessian mercenaries on the shores of New York with one intention in mind.  To break the rebellion and return the American colonies to the authority of the Crown.  The American Continental Army had 8,800 men, while only 6,923 were reported fit for duty.  Washington, understanding that his army was outnumbered, uneqipped, untrained, and incapable of victory in the field, undertook the tactics of Fabius.  He hit the enemy when he had the advantage, and ordered an "alteration of position," whenever the odds looked bad.  He knew he could not defeat the British with European battle tactics, so he determined to beat them by extending the conflict through unending minor skirmishes. Eventually pressure from London would bring the war to a victorious close.
The Battle of White Plains, which took place between October 31 and November 5, 1776, is a perfect example of Washington's successful tactics.  British commander General Howe deployed 13,000 Red Coats and Hessians in the area north of New York.  Greatly outnumbered the Americans fought behind rock fences and trees. After five days of fighting the British claimed a victory, but they lost two times as many men as the Americans, and they soon picked up and moved back to New York City.
What revelance does this story have to do with us today?  It teaches us that character and commitment to an honorable goal will always bring success.  It reminds us of what great cost our liberties were purchased.  It inspires us to honor those great men, who had such a vision for this nation that they were willing to die for it.  It gives us a clear path to victory in our own lives--don't get overwhelmed by circumstances, use what you have, and don't give up. And, it charges our imaginations with the question: if, two-hundred-and-thirty-five years ago this week, these men had given up, where would we be today?

Joe, Say it isn't So!

This past week, the week of November 6, 2011, the world of sports was shaken to its core as a grand jury indictment was released indicting Jerry Sandusky, the long term assistant coach at Pennsylvania State University, for multiple counts of child sexual abuse.  Besides the grizzly details of what Sandusky is alleged to have done against multiple small boys, the national bombshell exploded over the fact that his behavior HAD BEEN reported to Joe Paterno, the head coach of PSU, as early as 2002, and nothing was ever done to stop Sandusky's predatory behavior. Sandusky is now out on bail, and Coach Paterno was fired as head coach of PSU, a position he held over forty-six years.
Mountains of commentary, media reporting, and student demonstrations have expressed every spectrum of thought about this tragedy.  The best piece I have read on the subject was written by Phil Taylor entitled, "Pity the Children", located on the last page of the November 14 Sports Illustrated: see www.sportillustrated.com.  So there is no need to add to the reported facts, nor try to assess the devastation of Sandusky's victims.  However, I would like to offer insight as to how a wonderful man like Joe Paterno, a decent, religious man, a role model for decades of PSU students, could have made such a bad decision to not expose and stop this evil behavior.
I think we can call it a maxim, that whenever anyone, a president, a church, or a coach, puts the perpetuation of their reputation, self-interest, comfort, tradition, or whatever, before what is right, they start down a road that can only lead to disaster.  When Nixon cared more about his presidency than his moral obligation to speak the truth to the American people, he began a process that could only end in exposure, shame and disgrace.  When the Catholic Church chose to protect the institution above the safety of children, it set itself on a course that could only lead to exposure, shame and disgrace.  And when Joe Paterno chose to look the other way for the sake of the school's reputation and his friendship with Sandusky, he too chose the inevitable path of exposure, shame and disgrace.
What is the remedy?  Do we need to pass more and stricter laws against deviant behavior?  Do we need to have a truth patrol that checks and reports on the veracity of the words of every politician, church official, and coach?  Do we need to adjudicate, legislate and control, so that no one will ever dare to do or say the wrong thing?  No.  It begins in our hearts.  It begins when we recognize that there is right and there is wrong, and there are consequences to our choices.  Because of his wrong choice to pass the buck rather than stop the evil, many innocent children have been harmed, and Joe Paterno’s well-earned legacy has been destroyed.  As a man of faith, as a coach and a moral example to young men, he should have made a better choice.
